1812- Jakob and William Grimm's Little Red Cap

Once there was a dear little girl, loved by everyone but loved most of all by her grandmother. As a gift, her grandmother gave the girl a red cape, which she loved so much that she never wanted to wear anything else, and so she became known as Little Red Cap. One day, Little Red Cap’s mother asked her to take some cake and wine to her grandmother, who wasn’t well. Red Cap’s mother instructed her to stay true to the path so that she wouldn’t fall and break the wine, and to mind her manners upon arriving. “I’ll do everything right” Little Red Cap promised, and off she went.

Not long after setting off did Red Cap meet the wolf, but she was unaware of his wicked intent. The wolf asked the girl where she was going and she happily told. After accompanying her for a short while, the wolf tempted Red Cap off the path by pointing out the beauty of the woods she walked through, and she veered off to gather some flowers. Meanwhile, the wolf headed straight for the grandmother, where he pretended to be Little Red Cap bringing her cake and wine and was able to enter. Without saying a word, the wolf ate the grandmother and got in her nightgown and bed and waited.

A while later, the little girl arrived carrying cake, wine and flowers. She was surprised to see the door open and felt strange upon entering. Red Cap called out but got no answer, so went to her room and thought she looked very strange. Red Cap questioned her grandmother on her big ears, eyes, hands and mouth before the wolf gobbled her up and went to sleep. The wolf snored so loudly that a hunter walked past and checked on the old lady but instead saw the wolf. Realising she could still be alive, he cut the wolf open and discovered Red Cap and her grandmother alive and well. Little Red Cap ran and gathered some stones and they filled the wolf’s stomach with them and when he awoke, he could not move and soon died.

All three were happy, the hunter skinned the wolf and the grandmother ate the cake and drank the wine and felt better, and Little Red Cap promised never to leave the path again.
